Kanna Hashimoto is a Japanese actress who began her career as a singer in the Japanese idol girl group Rev. from DVL. She starred in various films, a majority of which are live-action adaptations of popular manga and anime series such as Assassination Classroom, Gintama, and Yowamushi Pedal.

Kanna was in third grade when she signed with the agency Active Hakata in her hometown, Fukuoka. She eventually joined the all-female pop group Rev. from DVL in 2009. The group was originally set to participate in activities solely within Fukuoka Prefecture but in 2013, Kanna received national attention when a photo of her taken from one of the group’s live performances went viral, boosting the Kanna’s and the group’s popularity. She received adoration for her natural and youthful beauty, earning her titles such as “Fukoaka Angel”, “beyond angelic idol”, and “a talent appearing once in a millennium”.

Kanna’s career took off as Rev. from DVL released their first single in 2014, LOVEArigatou-, which ranked sixth place on the weekly Oricon Singles Chart. The idol group released more singles since then, and eventually had their own radio and television programs, resulting in their popularity spreading across the whole country.

In 2015, Kanna landed in her first major film role in the live-action adaptation of Assassination Classroom, a science-fiction comedy film based on the manga and anime series of the same name. She played the role of Ritsu, an autonomous intelligence fixed artillery. She then played the lead role in the 2016 film Sailor Suit and Machine Gun: Graduation, a youth drama-comedy film, as Izumi Hoshi, a delinquent high school girl turned yakuza boss. Kanna also provided vocals for this film’s theme song, Sailor Fuku to Kikanju. Her rendition topped at 11th on Oricon’s charts and charted for seven weeks.

Her stellar performance landed her major roles in 2017 films such as The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. as Kokomi Teruhashi, and the lead role in Haruta & Chika as Chika Homura. She then starred as Kagura, a teenage alien girl in the live-action adaptation of Gintama. She later reprised the role in the 2018 sequel and TV series. This was followed by more leading roles in live-action adaptations such as Kaguya-sama: Love Is War as Kaguya Shinomiya, Come Kiss Me at 0:00 AM as Hinana Hanazawa, Signal 100 as Rena Kashimura, and Our Story as Shina Koyurugi. She also starred in several television dramas such as Sumiyoshi ya Monogatari: Wakuwaku ga, Ka ni Yattekuru, Water Polo Yankees where she plays as herself, The Noble Detective, Final Cut, and One Page Love.

Kanna’s career with singing came to an end in 2017 when Rev. from DVL announced that it would disband later on that year. Before that, they released their first and last album, NEVER SAY GOODBYE – Arigatou, and held final concerts in Tokyo and Fukuoka. Kanna won the first five awards of her career in 2014 namely: an Ameba Next Break Blogger in the Idol Category, Nikkei Trendy Works Top 30 for Person of the Year, 21st Best Smile of the Year, Yahoo! Search Awards in the Idol Category, and a Japan Jewelry Best Dresser Awards in the Teens Category. In 2015, she won a Special Mention in the Christmas Jewelry Princess Awards and a Nail Queen Awards in the Artist Category. This was followed by a Newcomer Award in the 40th Japan Academy Film Prize and Newcomer of the Year in the 44th Elan d’or Awards, in 2017 and 2020 respectively.

Although it has been confirmed that Kanna is the younger out of a pair of twins—very little is known of her personal life as she prefers to keep it under the wraps.
